SOC 1 attestation in Dallas-Fort Worth at a glance

Behind many Dallas-Fort Worth financial statements sits a service provider whose controls the auditor never sees directly. The Dallas Regional Chamber lists mortgage servicers, payment firms, banks, benefits administrators and insurers across the region, and the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas serves the district. When such a provider processes transactions or maintains records for a client, the client's auditor wants assurance, and the standard answer is a SOC 1 report: an attestation by a licensed CPA firm on the description of the system and the design, and for a Type 2 report the operation, of controls relevant to financial reporting. Sterling readies control descriptions and evidence from its New York office, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included.

SOC 1 in Dallas-Fort Worth: questions clients ask

When do DFW providers need a SOC 1 report?

Whenever a provider's work feeds a customer's financial statements, for instance by servicing loans, moving payments or administering benefits, the customer's auditor will request evidence of the controls involved. That evidence takes the form of a SOC 1 report, an attestation by a licensed CPA firm rather than a certificate.

What is the difference between a Type 1 and Type 2 SOC 1 report?

A Type 1 report covers the design of controls at a date, while a Type 2 report also tests how they operated over a period. Clients' auditors usually prefer Type 2. A licensed CPA firm issues both; Sterling prepares the organisation for the examination.
