In short

AS9100 certification in Sri Lanka at a glance

One Sri Lankan instrument bears on AS9100. It does not name the standard. So why do buyers in Sri Lanka keep asking for the certificate?

A precision engineering firm in a Sri Lankan export zone that wins its first aerospace enquiry usually meets AS9100 in the supplier approval pack. No Sri Lankan law requires the standard; the Board of Investment's profile of the Katunayake zone simply records precision manufacturing among the sectors it hosts. The requirement comes from the aerospace customer, who also decides which certification bodies it accepts, and SLAB's recognition page lists quality management systems without naming an aerospace scheme. Certification is by an accredited certification body, never by Sterling. Sterling's Mumbai office helps manufacturers close gaps against the standard, build configuration, risk and product safety controls, and prepare for the audit, with Effivity software and Sterling Academy training included with the engagement.

The need

Who needs AS9100 in Sri Lanka, and what happens without it

In Sri Lanka the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Precision engineering and machining firms in export processing zonesThe Board of Investment states that Katunayake hosts precision manufacturing, a base from which aerospace subcontracting is possible.
  • Electronics and rubber-based component makersThe zone's apparel, electronics and rubber-based sectors include firms that supply engineered parts to overseas assemblers.
  • Subcontractors seeking approved-supplier status with aerospace and defence primesPrimes write their own supplier approval conditions, usually on top of a quality system certificate.

AS9100 requirements in Sri Lanka

Strip away the vocabulary and AS9100 asks a supplier to prove six things about delivering aerospace products safely and on time.

Product safety is managedRisks to product safety are identified and controlled throughout the product's life, from design to delivery.
Configuration is under controlThe approved configuration of each product is identified, changes are controlled and records match what was delivered.
Counterfeit parts are kept outPurchasing, inspection and supplier controls stop counterfeit or suspect parts from entering the product.
Operational risks are managedRisks to delivery and product conformity are assessed and controlled during planning and production.
Production is proven before it runsProduction process verification, such as first article inspection, confirms that processes can make conforming product.
Delivery and conformity are measuredOn-time delivery and product conformity are measured, and human factors are considered when nonconformities are investigated.

In Sri Lanka these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: AS9100 explained →

How Sterling gets a Sri Lankan company certified

How to get AS9100 certified in Sri Lanka

One team from the Mumbai office carries the work from scoping to certificate. Clients across Sri Lanka are served from Sterling's Mumbai office, on-site where the work needs it and remotely otherwise.

    1. Discovery call and scopeEntities, locations, regulators and target date, agreed before any proposal.
    2. Gap assessment against AS9100 and the Sri Lankan requirements that apply to youControls you already run for your regulators and customers are reused, not rebuilt.
    3. Your system built with your team in EffivityRisks, controls, evidence, incidents and reviews in one live system the auditor can see.
    4. Internal audit, management review and corrective actionsYour internal auditors trained by Sterling; the evidence proven before the certification body arrives.
    5. Certification body stage 1 and stage 2, then surveillanceAn accredited body audits and decides. Sterling supports the audits and the three-year cycle.
    Included in every engagement

      Time

How long does AS9100 certification take in Sri Lanka?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Sri Lanka these are the factors that set the timeline.

      • Scope: sites, processes, products and special processes
      • Maturity of an existing ISO 9001 system
      • Customer flow-down requirements and configuration management
      • Certification body scheduling and sector-qualified auditor availability

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

      Cost

How much does AS9100 certification cost in Sri Lanka?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Sri Lanka these factors move both.

      • Headcount and number of sites in scope
      • Number of products, processes and subcontractors
      • Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting
      • Product safety, counterfeit parts and first article inspection controls

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

        Choosing a partner

AS9100 consultants and certification bodies in Sri Lanka

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

        • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers AS9100 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
        • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Sri Lanka are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
        • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
        • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Katunayake Export Processing Zone profile (Board of Investment)Does not name the standard
Records precision manufacturing among the sectors the zone hosts.

SLAB's recognition page lists quality management systems within its management systems scope but names no aerospace sector scheme.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Sri Lanka

AS9100 certification is a sector scheme, and your aerospace customer decides which certification bodies it accepts. SLAB's published recognition scopes list quality management systems generally and do not name the aerospace scheme, so ask the certification body for its accreditation and scheme approvals in writing and confirm with your customer before you apply. Audit language

Business records, standards and tenders are mostly in English, and the Constitution names English as the link language alongside Sinhala and Tamil; interviews with operators and workers may run in Sinhala or Tamil. Agree the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application.

          Remote and on-site

Audits are on-site at the shop floor and inspection areas; document review can be remote at the certification body's discretion.

AS9100 in Sri Lanka: questions clients ask

Is AS9100 required by Sri Lankan law?

None of the instruments cited here requires it. The Board of Investment's zone profile records precision manufacturing among the sectors the Katunayake zone hosts, but it does not mention aerospace standards. The requirement comes from an aerospace customer's supplier approval conditions, so ask the customer in writing which certificate it needs.

Does SLAB accredit certification bodies for AS9100?

SLAB's recognition page lists quality management systems among its management systems scopes but does not name an aerospace scheme. A certification body for AS9100 therefore needs to show the approvals your customer accepts, not only a general accreditation. Ask for those in writing and confirm with the customer before booking an audit.

Should an ISO 9001 certificate come before AS9100?

Not necessarily, but it helps. An established ISO 9001 system gives you controlled documents, internal audits and corrective action to build on, which shortens the gap analysis. SLAB's recognition page lists quality management systems, so ISO 9001 certification is available locally. Whether your customer needs both certificates is their decision.

Which Sri Lankan firms can realistically pursue AS9100?

Those with controlled, traceable manufacturing and customers in aerospace supply chains. The Board of Investment lists precision manufacturing, electronics and rubber-based products among the activities at Katunayake, which is the kind of base subcontractors build from. A customer's approved-supplier list is the real gate, so start by asking what it requires.
