ISO and GRC certification in Sohar at a glance

Sohar is where Oman's heavy industry meets its largest port. SOHAR Port, a joint venture between the Port of Rotterdam and the Omani government, has steel, petrochemical and plastics plants in its industrial area, and the ministry credits it with over 80% of Oman's maritime cargo in 2022. Beside it, Sohar Free Zone, created by Royal Decree 123/2010 and supervised by OPAZ, hosts logistics, metals, petrochemical and renewable-energy manufacturers, among them a solar polysilicon project, while Madayn adds Suhar Industrial City. Hafeet Rail's first phase links the port to the UAE rail network. Demand here is for quality, environmental, safety, energy and continuity systems more than for city-level rules, and certificates come from accredited certification bodies, never from Sterling. Sterling serves Sohar from Sterling's Dubai office, with 8,100+ client engagements in 60+ countries, 20+ years of practice, and Effivity and Sterling Academy included. National law is on the Oman page.

Sohar is the main port and heavy-industry city of Oman's Batinah coast, in North Al Batinah. SOHAR Port, developed through a joint venture between the Port of Rotterdam and the Omani government, sits beside Sohar Free Zone, created by Royal Decree 123/2010, and Madayn runs Suhar Industrial City nearby. The ministry credits the port with over 80% of Oman's maritime cargo in 2022, and the first phase of Hafeet Rail links Sohar to the UAE rail network.

Questions Sohar clients ask

What is the difference between Sohar Free Zone, SOHAR Port and Suhar Industrial City?

Sohar Free Zone is the OPAZ-supervised zone created by Royal Decree 123/2010 beside the port. The port area is developed through the SOHAR joint venture of the Port of Rotterdam and the Omani government. Suhar Industrial City is a separate Madayn estate. Each operator has its own lease and licensing terms, so ask the right one.

Which industries define Sohar for management-system demand?

Steel and metals, petrochemicals and plastics, renewable-energy manufacturing and port logistics. The Port of Rotterdam reports steel, petrochemical and plastics plants in the port area, OPAZ names a solar polysilicon project in the free zone, and the ministry describes a deep-water port. These point towards quality, environment, safety, energy and continuity systems.

Does Sohar Free Zone do anything on environmental monitoring?

OPAZ's 2025 briefing says a sustainability plan was implemented in Sohar Free Zone, including an air quality monitoring network. It does not say tenants must hold ISO 14001, but zone-level monitoring makes emissions visible, which is why customers and neighbours ask. Check your lease and the zone operator for any tenant obligations.

How does Sterling support Sohar clients?

For Sohar, the answer is Sterling's Dubai office: work is done on site when the site needs it and by video otherwise, and Effivity and Sterling Academy are included with the engagement. The client picks the accredited certification body that finally issues any certificate.
