ISO 37001 certification in Nigeria at a glance
In Nigeria, ISO 37001 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, established under the ICPC Act 2000, investigates and prosecutes offenders and reviews systems in public bodies, and the Bureau of Public Procurement publishes a list of debarred vendors. For a Nigerian contractor, exporter or financial institution, that makes integrity a commercial as well as a legal topic. ISO 37001 gives a documented way to assess bribery risk, control third parties and show diligence to buyers, parent companies and correspondents, although it never shields anyone from prosecution. Accreditation needs care: Global ACI lists ISO 37001 in the Nigeria National Accreditation System's scope list without a recognition date, so ask a certification body what stands behind its certificate. Sterling's Lagos office helps organisations build the risk assessment, due diligence and speak-up processes and run internal audits, with Effivity software and Sterling Academy training included with the engagement.
Who needs ISO 37001 in Nigeria, and what happens without it
In Nigeria the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Contractors and suppliers pursuing public-sector and oil and gas workBuyers weigh integrity risk when they register and pre-qualify suppliers, and the procurement regulator publishes a list of debarred vendors.
- Banks, payment firms and fintechsFinancial institutions face heightened integrity and conduct expectations from regulators and correspondents.
- Multinational subsidiaries and exportersParent companies and overseas customers push anti-bribery controls down to local operations and agents.
- Companies using agents, distributors and customs intermediariesThird-party intermediaries are the usual route for bribery risk and need due diligence.
- Public bodies and their suppliersICPC's activities include reviewing systems in ministries, departments and agencies.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 37001 requires a company to prove six things about how it prevents, detects and responds to bribery.
In Nigeria these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 37001 explained →

How long does ISO 37001 certification take in Nigeria?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Nigeria these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Bribery risk assessment by country, sector and counterparty
- Maturity of due diligence on agents and intermediaries
- Gifts, hospitality, donations and conflict-of-interest records
- Certification body scheduling
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 37001 certification cost in Nigeria?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Nigeria these factors move both.
- Number of entities, countries and high-risk relationships in scope
- Due diligence tooling and training
- Certification body audit fees, quoted separately from consulting
- Speak-up channel and investigation set-up
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 37001 consultants and certification bodies in Nigeria
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 37001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Nigeria are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.
Laws and regulations that drive ISO 37001 in Nigeria (3)
| Instrument | How it treats the standard |
|---|---|
| Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) | Context ICPC describes itself as established under the ICPC Act 2000 to investigate and prosecute offenders, improve public sector systems and educate the public; an ISO 37001 certificate does not shield an organisation from the law. |
| Bureau of Public Procurement — debarred vendors and standard bidding documents | Context BPP publishes a list of debarred vendors and revised standard bidding documents, so integrity is a live topic in federal procurement; bidding documents decide what evidence is asked. |

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Nigeria
Use a certification body accredited for ISO 37001 by the Nigeria National Accreditation System (NiNAS) or by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. Global ACI lists ISO 37001 in the scope list for NiNAS without a recognition date, so ask the certification body which accreditation backs an anti-bribery certificate and whether your customer or counterpart accepts it. The accredited certification body decides, not Sterling. Edition and transition details: ISO 37001 hub →
Audit language
English is the usual audit and document language; agree it with the certification body at application, and say early if interviews will run in another language.
Remote and on-site
Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion; head offices, project sites and procurement and finance functions are normally visited, and gifts, third-party and due diligence records can be reviewed remotely.
ISO 37001 in Nigeria: questions clients ask
Does ISO 37001 protect a company from prosecution in Nigeria?
No. ICPC describes itself as established under the ICPC Act 2000 to investigate and prosecute offenders, and a certificate does not change the law. It shows that an organisation runs documented anti-bribery controls, which counts as evidence of diligence. Ask your counsel how controls and certification are viewed under the statutes that apply to you.
Is ISO 37001 required to win Nigerian government contracts?
The Bureau of Public Procurement publishes a list of debarred vendors and standard bidding documents, and its contractor registration procedure does not list ISO certificates. A particular tender may ask for integrity evidence, so read each bidding document. An anti-bribery system can still support your answers to such questions.
Can a Nigerian-accredited body certify to ISO 37001?
Local recognition is not shown: Global ACI places ISO 37001 on the national accreditation body's scope list with no date. Certification bodies accredited abroad can still audit Nigerian clients. Ask any body for its accreditation certificate, read the scope line, and find out whether the counterparties who matter to you will accept it.
Where does bribery risk usually sit for a Nigerian company?
In third parties: agents, distributors, customs and logistics intermediaries and joint venture partners. Gifts, hospitality and facilitation of approvals follow. Start the risk assessment with a list of every intermediary and the interactions it has with officials, then rank them. Take legal advice on the specific statutes that govern those interactions.
