In short

ISO 13485 certification in Utrecht at a glance

Utrecht Science Park is built around life sciences and health, with medical centres, knowledge institutions and R&D companies on the same site, so the route from a clinical idea to a device used on patients is short. What lengthens it is documentation. ISO 13485 is the quality system for organisations that design, make or supply medical devices: design and development controls, risk management, supplier controls, traceability, complaint handling, corrective action and internal audit. Sterling helps campus teams build a system that fits their size, shows regulators and distributors a coherent design file, and prepares for an accredited certification body's assessment. It is a management system certificate and not product approval.

Requirements

What ISO 13485 requires

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 13485 requires a company to prove six things about making medical devices that are safe and work as intended.

Regulatory requirements are built inThe quality system covers the regulatory requirements of each market you supply and your role in the device supply chain.
Design is controlledDesign and development are planned, verified and validated, with changes controlled and a file kept for each device.
Risk management runs through the life cycleRisks to safety and performance are managed from design through production, delivery and use.
Production and suppliers are controlledProduction, process validation, cleanliness, sterilisation where relevant and purchased components are controlled and recorded.
Every device can be tracedIdentification and traceability let you find the components, batches and records behind any device you have released.
Complaints and feedback drive actionComplaints and nonconformities are handled, reported to regulators where required, and closed through corrective and preventive action.

ISO 13485 in Utrecht: questions clients ask

Do Utrecht Science Park teams need ISO 13485 before a device launches?

A quality system is expected well before market entry, because design records, risk files and supplier controls are hard to rebuild afterwards. Distributors and clinical partners also ask for it. Your regulatory adviser should confirm what your device needs; the certificate does not itself authorise sale.

Is ISO 13485 needed by suppliers to medical centres?

Only where the buyer says so. Suppliers of devices, components or critical services are often asked for it, while general suppliers are not. Read the purchaser's supplier terms, and ask whether a quality system audit by the customer would be accepted instead.
