AS9100 certification in Malaysia at a glance
In Malaysia, AS9100 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.
Aerospace buyers check one database before anything else: the IAQG's Online Aerospace Supplier Information System (OASIS), where AS9100 certificates are recorded. For Malaysian machine shops, composite and component manufacturers, and maintenance and engineering firms that want to supply aircraft and engine makers, that entry is usually the condition for being added to an approved supplier list. No Malaysian regulation requires AS9100; the demand comes from customers. The standard builds on ISO 9001 with aerospace requirements such as configuration management, product safety and counterfeit part prevention. Certificates are issued by certification bodies operating under IAQG rules with the relevant accreditation, and Standards Malaysia accredits certification bodies for quality management systems, but buyers will look for the OASIS record. Electronics manufacturers in Kulim Hi-Tech Park diversifying into aerospace assemblies face the same expectation. Sterling's Kuala Lumpur office takes manufacturers from an existing quality system to AS9100 readiness, including process mapping, risk controls and internal audit. The local questions are covered below.
Who needs AS9100 in Malaysia, and what happens without it
In Malaysia the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Machining, composite and component manufacturers seeking aerospace contractsAircraft and engine makers and their tier suppliers require AS9100 for approved supplier status.
- Electronics manufacturers in Kulim Hi-Tech Park moving into aerospace assembliesHigh-value manufacturers serve global customers with sector certification requirements.
- Maintenance, repair and engineering firmsAerospace customers check supplier certification records.

Strip away the vocabulary and AS9100 asks a supplier to prove six things about delivering aerospace products safely and on time.
In Malaysia these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: AS9100 explained →

How long does AS9100 certification take in Malaysia?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Malaysia these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Number of sites and special processes in scope
- Maturity of the existing ISO 9001 system
- Configuration management and counterfeit part prevention controls
- Customer-specific requirements
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does AS9100 certification cost in Malaysia?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Malaysia these factors move both.
- Number of sites and headcount
- Special process controls and inspection equipment
- Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting
- Training of internal auditors in aerospace requirements
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
AS9100 consultants and certification bodies in Malaysia
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers AS9100 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Malaysia are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

AS9100 in Malaysia: questions clients ask
Is AS9100 required by Malaysian law?
No. Nothing recorded in Malaysian law requires AS9100; it is a customer requirement in aerospace supply chains. Whether you need it depends on what your aerospace customers write into their supplier approval conditions, so read those conditions first and ask the customer directly before committing to the cost of a certification project.
Can an ISO 9001-certified plant move to AS9100?
In principle, yes. AS9100 builds on ISO 9001 and adds aerospace requirements, so a working ISO 9001 system is the foundation rather than something to replace. How smooth the move is depends largely on the maturity of that existing system and how much of the aerospace content it must absorb.
