ISO 37001 certification in Ghana at a glance
In Ghana, ISO 37001 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.
Ghana's anti-corruption framework gives ISO 37001 context but no mandate. The Office of the Special Prosecutor, established in 2018 under Act 959, investigates and prosecutes corruption in the public and private sectors and takes steps to prevent it, and the Public Procurement Authority exists to promote fairness and transparency in public buying. Neither names the standard. Demand comes from bidders who want to answer integrity questions, oil and gas and mining suppliers working with registrations and local content plans, and subsidiaries of multinational groups that must show control over agents, gifts and facilitation. A certificate shows a system of controls has been audited; it is not a defence to prosecution. The Ghana Accreditation Service is an Associate Member of Global ACI, so certification bodies usually carry accreditation from another economy. Risk assessment, due diligence, policies and training are delivered from Sterling's Lagos office, and Effivity and Sterling Academy come with the engagement.
Who needs ISO 37001 in Ghana, and what happens without it
In Ghana the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.
- Contractors and suppliers bidding for public contractsPublic procurement rests on fairness and transparency, and bidders with a documented anti-bribery system answer integrity questions more easily.
- Oil and gas service companiesRegistration and local content plans bring regulator scrutiny, and operators screen contractors for bribery risk.
- Mining suppliers and contractorsLocal content rules and procurement lists involve many third-party transactions where bribery risk sits.
- Exporters and subsidiaries of multinational groupsGroup anti-corruption policies require local entities to show controls over agents, gifts and facilitation.
- State-owned bodies and their suppliersPublic bodies face scrutiny from the Office of the Special Prosecutor, whose remit covers public and private sectors.

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 37001 requires a company to prove six things about how it prevents, detects and responds to bribery.
In Ghana these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: ISO 37001 explained →

How long does ISO 37001 certification take in Ghana?
There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Ghana these are the factors that set the timeline.
- Bribery risk assessment covering countries, sectors and partners
- Due diligence on agents, suppliers and joint venture partners
- Number of entities and high-risk transactions in scope
- Certification body scheduling
Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.
How much does ISO 37001 certification cost in Ghana?
The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Ghana these factors move both.
- Number of entities, employees and high-risk partners in scope
- Investigations, hotline and training arrangements
- Certification body audit fees, quoted separately from consulting
- Legal advice on policies and local rules
Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.
ISO 37001 consultants and certification bodies in Ghana
Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.
- Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers ISO 37001 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
- Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Ghana are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
- Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
- Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.
Laws and regulations that drive ISO 37001 in Ghana (3)
| Instrument | How it treats the standard |
|---|---|
| Office of the Special Prosecutor Act, 2017 (Act 959) | Context The Office states it investigates and prosecutes corruption and corruption-related offences in the public and private sectors and takes steps to prevent corruption; it does not name ISO 37001. |
| Public Procurement Act, 2003 (Act 663) and the Public Procurement Authority | Context The Authority exists to promote fairness, transparency and non-discrimination in public procurement; it lists no general ISO 37001 requirement and each tender sets its own criteria. |
| Ghana Accreditation Service (GHAS) and Global ACI membership | Accreditation Global ACI lists the Ghana Accreditation Service as an Associate Member and not among its Full Members, so ISO 37001 certification usually rests on accreditation from another economy. |
Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Ghana
Use a certification body accredited for ISO 37001 by an accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). Ghana's own accreditation body, the Ghana Accreditation Service, is listed by Global ACI as an Associate Member and not among its Full Members, so a certificate that carries recognition across the arrangements normally comes from a body accredited in another economy. A certificate does not shield an organisation from prosecution or prove that no bribery occurred; it shows that a system of controls has been audited. Ask each body for its accreditation certificate and check that the scope covers the standard and your sector. The accredited certification body decides, not Sterling. Audit language
English is the usual audit and document language; agree it with the certification body at application, and say early if interviews will run in a local language.
Remote and on-site
Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion; project sites, procurement and finance functions are sampled on-site, with interviews of staff and managers.
ISO 37001 in Ghana: questions clients ask
Does ISO 37001 protect a company from prosecution in Ghana?
No. The Office of the Special Prosecutor investigates corruption in the public and private sectors, and a certificate is not a legal defence or proof that no bribe was paid. It shows an anti-bribery management system exists and has been audited, which can help in demonstrating reasonable preventive steps. Take advice from counsel on what the law requires of your business.
Do Ghanaian tenders ask for ISO 37001?
Not as a general rule. The Public Procurement Authority publishes tenders and keeps supplier databases, and each tender document sets its own integrity and qualification criteria, which may include declarations or codes of conduct. A certificate can strengthen a bid in competitive evaluations. Read each tender's conditions rather than assuming one requirement applies.
Which third parties create the most bribery risk for Ghanaian firms?
Agents, customs and licensing intermediaries, subcontractors, joint venture partners and sponsored events usually top the list, especially in public tenders, mining and upstream petroleum supply chains where contracts and permits are involved. A risk assessment ranks your own partners by exposure, and due diligence proportionate to each rating follows.
Who accredits ISO 37001 certification bodies for Ghana?
Look abroad for the accreditation. Ghana's own service holds Associate Member status at Global ACI and has named testing and calibration as its first areas, so certification bodies working here are generally accredited by other members. Check each body's scope for ISO 37001, ask which sectors its auditors know, and treat any promise of a quick certificate with suspicion.
