In short

SOC 2 attestation in Suzhou at a glance

US enterprises that procure software, cloud and data services from Suzhou ask the same thing before signing: can an independent party vouch for your controls? A SOC 2 report is the answer. It is an attestation, not a certificate: a licensed CPA firm tests the controls of a service organisation against the trust services criteria, always covering security and adding availability, processing integrity, confidentiality or privacy where relevant. A Type 1 report looks at design on one date, a Type 2 at how controls operated over a period. Sterling serves Suzhou from its Shanghai office, prepares the controls and evidence with Effivity, and the CPA firm issues the report. Chinese data duties apply as well.

Controls work over timeFor a Type 2 report, a licensed CPA firm tests that the controls operated effectively across the review period.

SOC 2 in Suzhou: questions clients ask

When does a Suzhou software firm need SOC 2 rather than ISO 27001?

When US customers specifically ask for a SOC 2 report in due diligence. ISO 27001 is a certificate widely accepted in Asia and Europe, while US buyers often prefer the CPA firm's report. Many Suzhou firms hold both and reuse controls. Ask the prospect which it will accept before choosing, and check whether Type 1 or Type 2 is expected.

What does a Type 2 SOC 2 report show a Suzhou customer?

That the controls described by the company operated effectively across the review period, as tested by the CPA firm. A Type 1 report shows only that they were suitably designed on one date. Customers with strict vendor programmes usually want Type 2, so plan the evidence collection from the start of the period.
