In short

ISO 42001 certification in Shanghai at a glance

Artificial intelligence is one of Shanghai's three priority industries in the municipal statistics overview, and Zhangjiang and Lingang both name it among their fields. ISO/IEC 42001 is the first certifiable management system for AI: an AI policy, roles, risk and impact assessment, controls over the data and model life cycle, supplier oversight, monitoring and internal audit. Whether you build models, embed them in products or procure them from others, the standard gives a documented way to govern them that customers and partners can examine. Sterling's Shanghai office helps developers and deploying companies set up the system and prepare for the accredited audit. Regulatory filings for AI services are a separate matter, covered on the China page.

What ISO 42001 requires

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 42001 requires a company to prove six things about how it governs the AI it builds or uses.

You know where AI is usedThe AI systems you develop, provide or use are identified, together with the role your organisation plays for each.
Leadership sets the rules for AITop management sets an AI policy and objectives, assigns accountability and provides resources for responsible use.
You assessed AI risks and impactsRisks from AI systems, and their impacts on individuals, groups and society, are assessed before and during use and then treated.
Each AI system is managed through its lifeDesign, data, testing, deployment, monitoring and retirement follow defined processes with records you can show.
Data and third parties are under controlThe quality and origin of data, and suppliers of models or components, are managed against your own requirements.
You monitor, audit and improveAI systems and the management system are monitored, audited internally and reviewed by management, with problems corrected.

ISO 42001 in Shanghai: questions clients ask

Why would a Shanghai AI company pursue ISO 42001?

To give enterprise customers and overseas partners a certificate-backed answer on how its AI is governed, from data sourcing to monitoring. No Shanghai rule requires it, and it does not replace the regulatory duties for AI services in China. The strongest case comes from firms that sell models or AI-enabled products into regulated sectors such as finance and healthcare.

Does ISO 42001 apply to firms that only use AI?

Yes. The standard covers organisations that develop, provide or use AI-based products or services, so a bank or manufacturer deploying third-party models can certify too. The scope statement should name the AI systems and uses covered. Supplier oversight is a large part of the work for deployers, since they depend on models they did not build.
