IATF 16949 certification in Shanghai at a glance
Vehicle makers source from suppliers that can prove process discipline, and the Shanghai municipal overview names automotive as one of six key industrial clusters. IATF 16949 is the certification those buyers expect from tier-one and tier-two suppliers: it adds to ISO 9001 the automotive core tools, such as advanced product quality planning, FMEA, measurement system analysis and statistical process control, plus each customer's own specific requirements. Certificates come only from certification bodies recognised by the IATF. Sterling's Shanghai office helps component makers read the customer-specific requirements first, then closes gaps in control plans, supplier management and internal audits so the stage one audit is not the first test of the system.

IATF 16949 in Shanghai: questions clients ask
Which Shanghai suppliers are asked for IATF 16949?
Suppliers whose parts end up in a vehicle programme, from machined and moulded components to wiring, electronics and coatings. The request comes from the vehicle maker or a tier-one supplier in its supply terms, not from a city rule, and it often reaches lower tiers for safety-related parts. Ask the buyer in writing which tier must certify and whether ISO 9001 alone is accepted.
What does IATF 16949 add to ISO 9001 for a Shanghai plant?
It adds product safety rules, core tools and customer-specific requirements to the ISO 9001 base. Control plans, failure mode analysis and statistical process control must be working tools on the shop floor, not documents prepared for the audit. Internal auditors need automotive competence too, so plants usually run a gap assessment first and then train staff on the tools.
