AS9100 certification in Shanghai at a glance
Aircraft are not only assembled on the big lines: Shanghai's aviation supply chain reaches into the Lingang special area, where the State Council's founding plan names civil aviation as a key field, and past Pudong airport, whose third terminal moved into construction in November 2024. AS9100 is the quality management standard aerospace buyers expect from machine shops, electronics makers and maintenance providers. It builds on ISO 9001 with requirements on product safety, configuration management, counterfeit-part prevention, risk and on-time delivery, and certificates are recorded in the industry's OASIS database by accredited certification bodies. Sterling's Shanghai office works with suppliers on gap assessments, documentation and internal audits before the certification audit.

AS9100 in Shanghai: questions clients ask
Does Lingang's civil aviation focus make AS9100 mandatory?
No. The State Council plan names civil aviation as a key field for Lingang, but it does not require suppliers to hold AS9100. The requirement comes from the aerospace customer's purchase terms, which often flow the standard down to every tier. Ask the buyer which edition and certificate scope it accepts before starting, because a part-specific demand shapes the whole project.
Which Shanghai suppliers usually start with AS9100?
Precision machinists, electronics and cable-harness makers and maintenance providers that already hold ISO 9001 are the common starters, since AS9100 builds on it. Those close to Lingang or supplying aircraft programmes tend to be asked first. The extra effort lies in configuration control, first-article inspection and supplier flow-down, so a gap assessment usually comes before any audit is booked.
