In short

ISO 22000 certification in Toronto at a glance

A food processor in the Toronto Region is rarely audited only once. Retailers, brand owners, importers abroad and inspectors each ask similar questions about hazards, hygiene and traceability. ISO 22000 offers one management system to answer them: hazard analysis in the HACCP tradition, operational and prerequisite programmes, communication along the food chain, emergency preparedness and continual improvement. Toronto Global counts over 1,400 food and beverage manufacturers in the region, and packaging, cold-store and logistics firms around them work to the same food-chain logic. Sterling's Toronto office designs the system around real operations, and an accredited certification body issues the certificate. Benchmarked retailer schemes, such as FSSC 22000, are a separate page.

What drives ISO 22000 in Toronto

Demand is buyer-led: customers and export markets ask for ISO 22000 or an equivalent scheme; no Toronto authority is recorded as requiring it.

Requirements

What ISO 22000 requires

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO 22000 requires a company to prove six things about keeping food safe from supplier to customer.

The basics of hygiene are in placePrerequisite programmes cover premises, cleaning, pest control, personal hygiene, water, maintenance and supplier approval.
You analysed the hazardsBiological, chemical and physical hazards are identified for each product and process step, and the controls needed are decided.
Critical controls are monitoredControl measures are validated, monitored and acted on when limits are breached, following HACCP principles.
Unsafe product does not leaveTraceability, handling of potentially unsafe product, withdrawal and recall are planned and tested.
Food safety information flows along the chainInformation is exchanged with suppliers, customers, authorities and your own staff so hazards are not missed.
Leadership reviews and improvesManagement sets food safety policy and objectives, the system is verified and audited, and it is updated as risks change.

ISO 22000 in Toronto: questions clients ask

Is ISO 22000 enough for retailers who ask for a benchmarked scheme?

Not always. ISO 22000 is a management system standard that is not itself benchmarked by the Global Food Safety Initiative, while FSSC 22000 builds on it and is. If your retail customers insist on a benchmarked scheme, plan for FSSC 22000, or ask whether ISO 22000 satisfies the customer's own supplier approval.

Which Toronto food businesses start with ISO 22000?

Mid-sized processors, ingredient suppliers, packers and cold-chain firms that need one framework for several customer audits often start here. The region's food and beverage cluster is large, so the range runs from sauce makers to distributors. Smaller kitchens may need only a HACCP plan.
