ISO 13485 certification in Toronto at a glance

Few Canadian locations pack as much clinical and research capacity into one place as Toronto's Discovery District, a downtown research park that Toronto Global describes as holding hospitals, research institutes, business incubators and the University of Toronto. Device ideas born there need a quality system before they reach patients. ISO 13485 is that system: it asks for controlled design and development, risk management, supplier control, traceability and complaint handling, and it is the standard hospitals and distributors expect from a manufacturer. Sterling's Toronto office builds the system with start-ups and established device firms across the region, and an accredited certification body assesses it. Regulatory treatment sits on the Canada page.

Requirements

What ISO 13485 requires

Regulatory requirements are built inThe quality system covers the regulatory requirements of each market you supply and your role in the device supply chain.
Design is controlledDesign and development are planned, verified and validated, with changes controlled and a file kept for each device.
Risk management runs through the life cycleRisks to safety and performance are managed from design through production, delivery and use.
Production and suppliers are controlledProduction, process validation, cleanliness, sterilisation where relevant and purchased components are controlled and recorded.
Every device can be tracedIdentification and traceability let you find the components, batches and records behind any device you have released.
Complaints and feedback drive actionComplaints and nonconformities are handled, reported to regulators where required, and closed through corrective and preventive action.

ISO 13485 in Toronto: questions clients ask

Does the Discovery District create demand for ISO 13485?

It does, indirectly. The district gathers hospitals, research institutes and incubators, and device start-ups emerging from that setting soon face distributors and hospital buyers who ask for a quality management system. ISO 13485 is the usual answer. The district does not set the requirement; customers and market-access rules do.

Is ISO 13485 only for hardware makers in Toronto?

No. Toronto Global lists digital health beside medtech and devices, and software that functions as a medical device also needs a quality system with design controls and risk management. Firms offering only wellness software may not fall under device rules, so check the product's intended use with your regulatory adviser.
