In short

PCI DSS compliance in Calgary at a glance

PCI DSS touches Calgary through ordinary commerce. A fintech that processes payments for clients, a software firm whose checkout page sits on a merchant's site, a restaurant group, a logistics business collecting card payments at the door: all fall under the payment industry's security standard if card data passes through their hands or systems. PCI DSS covers network security, access control, encryption, vulnerability management, monitoring and testing, and it is enforced through acquirer and card-brand contracts rather than statute. Validation is by a qualified assessor or, for some merchants, a self-assessment. Sterling's Toronto office serves Calgary organisations, reducing scope where possible and preparing evidence for the assessment.

What drives PCI DSS in Calgary

Demand is contractual: acquirers and card brands require PCI DSS through merchant and service-provider agreements; no Calgary authority is recorded as requiring it.

Requirements

What PCI DSS requires

Strip away the vocabulary and PCI DSS asks any business that stores, processes or transmits card data to comply in six areas.

You know where card data livesThe cardholder data environment is scoped, data flows are mapped and the environment is segmented where possible.
Networks are protectedNetwork security controls restrict traffic to and from systems that handle card data, and configurations are hardened.
Stored data is minimised and protectedOnly the card data you need is kept, sensitive authentication data is not retained after authorisation except under issuer rules, and the rest is protected.
Access is restricted and authenticatedAccess to card data is limited to people who need it, with unique IDs and multi-factor authentication where required.
Systems are logged and testedActivity is logged and reviewed, vulnerabilities are scanned and patched, and penetration testing is carried out.
Policies and people keep it runningSecurity policies, staff awareness, vendor management and incident response keep controls working between assessments.

PCI DSS in Calgary: questions clients ask

How do Calgary merchants find their PCI DSS validation level?

The acquirer or payment provider assigns it, usually by card volume and how payments are taken, and tells the merchant which questionnaire or assessor-led report applies. Ask them in writing. Using a validated payment page or terminal can reduce what must be assessed.

Does PCI DSS apply to a Calgary software company that never sees card numbers?

Not necessarily. If card data never touches your systems and you use a compliant hosted payment page, the scope is much smaller, though your acquirer may still expect a self-assessment. If your code or network can affect payment pages, scope expands. Document the data flow and ask your provider.
