ISO 14001 certification in Calgary at a glance
A Calgary-based energy operator signs off contractors by checking, among other things, how they manage environmental risk, and Calgary Economic Development counts more than 70 major energy companies with head offices in the city. The same logic applies to cleantech firms and manufacturers. The City of Calgary adds its own layer: licensing for manufacturers includes wastewater treatment requirements for producers of stone, tile or metal products. ISO 14001 helps an organisation identify its environmental aspects, keep a register of legal and other obligations, set objectives, control operations and prove it through audit and review. It does not replace any permit. Sterling's Toronto office serves Calgary sites; an accredited certification body issues the certificate.

ISO 14001 in Calgary: questions clients ask
Does ISO 14001 replace the City's wastewater requirements for a Calgary manufacturer?
No. The City sets wastewater treatment requirements for certain producers as part of licensing, and certification does not substitute for them. ISO 14001 helps a plant identify such obligations, keep them in a legal register and show they are met. Confirm exact requirements with the City.
Why do Calgary energy contractors need ISO 14001?
Because operators headquartered in the city assess contractors' environmental performance before awarding work, and many accept or prefer a certified management system as evidence. The wording varies by operator, so read each prequalification form. A system can also reduce incident and waste costs.
