In short

AS9100 certification in Australia at a glance

In Australia, AS9100 is asked for by buyers and schemes rather than required by law. The drivers below show where the pressure comes from.

Aerospace and defence suppliers usually meet AS9100 as a customer requirement rather than a legal one: no Australian regulator checked for this page mandates it, but aircraft, engine and defence prime contractors flow it down through their purchase orders. The standard takes the ISO 9001 quality management requirements and adds aerospace controls on configuration management, product safety, counterfeit parts, special processes and first article inspection. Certification is carried out by certification bodies approved to operate the aerospace scheme and accredited for it, and issued certificates are recorded in the International Aerospace Quality Group's supplier database. JASANZ accredits certification bodies operating in Australia and New Zealand; check that the chosen body's accreditation covers AS9100 before applying. An existing ISO 9001 system is the usual starting point, and gaps tend to sit in traceability and supplier control. Sterling prepares aerospace suppliers from its Sydney office, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included in the engagement.

The need

Who needs AS9100 in Australia, and what happens without it

In Australia the question rarely comes from a law. It comes from the buyer, the regulator or the partner that wants proof before it signs. These are the organisations that get asked.

  • Aerospace component manufacturers and machine shopsAircraft and engine makers commonly require AS9100 of their suppliers.
  • Defence industry suppliers working on aerospace platformsPrime contractors flow AS9100 down through purchase orders.
  • Organisations already certified to ISO 9001AS9100 includes ISO 9001 requirements with aerospace additions.

AS9100 requirements in Australia

Strip away the vocabulary and AS9100 asks a supplier to prove six things about delivering aerospace products safely and on time.

Product safety is managedRisks to product safety are identified and controlled throughout the product's life, from design to delivery.
Configuration is under controlThe approved configuration of each product is identified, changes are controlled and records match what was delivered.
Counterfeit parts are kept outPurchasing, inspection and supplier controls stop counterfeit or suspect parts from entering the product.
Operational risks are managedRisks to delivery and product conformity are assessed and controlled during planning and production.
Production is proven before it runsProduction process verification, such as first article inspection, confirms that processes can make conforming product.
Delivery and conformity are measuredOn-time delivery and product conformity are measured, and human factors are considered when nonconformities are investigated.

In Australia these six sit alongside the local laws and regulations listed under drivers below; one system can evidence both. The detail is on the global hub: AS9100 explained →

      Time

How long does AS9100 certification take in Australia?

There is no standard duration: it depends on your scope and on how much of the system already runs. In Australia these are the factors that set the timeline.

      • Product and process complexity, including special processes
      • Existing ISO 9001 system to build on
      • Configuration management and first article inspection readiness
      • Certification body scheduling

Sterling agrees a dated plan with you on the discovery call, once the scope is known.

      Cost

How much does AS9100 certification cost in Australia?

The cost has two parts: the consulting work to build and prove the system, and the certification body’s audit fees, which are quoted separately. In Australia these factors move both.

      • Number of sites and employees
      • Special processes and product safety requirements in scope
      • Certification body audit fees quoted separately from consulting

Sterling gives one customised, all-inclusive proposal after the discovery call, never before the scope is agreed.

        Choosing a partner

AS9100 consultants and certification bodies in Australia

Two different organisations are involved. A consultant helps you build the system and prove it works; an accredited certification body then audits or assesses it and decides. Keeping the two separate is what makes the result credible to buyers and regulators.

        • Check that the body’s accreditation or approval covers AS9100 and your sector, and that its certificates can be verified online.
        • Ask the consultant how the local requirements in Australia are mapped into the same system, so nothing runs twice.
        • Ask for client references in your sector; Sterling’s client letters are available on request.
        • Agree who owns the evidence and the tool after the engagement; with Sterling the system stays yours, in Effivity.

Laws and regulations that drive AS9100 in Australia (1)

          InstrumentHow it treats the standard
JASANZ — accreditation of certification bodiesAccreditation
Accredits certification bodies for management-system standards; confirm the AS9100 scope of the chosen certification body.

Accreditation, audit language and remote audits in Australia

Use a certification body accredited for this standard by JASANZ or by another accreditation body within the international mutual recognition arrangements (Global ACI — Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA); check that the accreditation scope covers the standard and your sector. No body is named here unless its accreditation scope has been verified. Edition and transition details: AS9100 hub →

          Audit language

Audits are conducted in English; agree the audit and document language with the certification body at application.

          Remote and on-site

Remote audit elements are at the certification body's discretion under its accreditation rules; operational sites are normally visited on-site.

AS9100 in Australia: questions clients ask

Is AS9100 required by an Australian regulator?

No regulator we checked in Australia mandates AS9100. It is a customer requirement, written into supply contracts, so the place to look is the contract or approved-supplier terms you have been given, not a statute. Ask the buyer exactly what it expects of your scope, and confirm the details with the buyer directly.

Can an ISO 9001 certificate be upgraded to AS9100?

In practice yes, because AS9100 builds on ISO 9001 requirements and adds aerospace-specific ones, so an existing quality system is a strong starting point. It is not an automatic upgrade, though. AS9100 certification is a separate audit by an aerospace-approved certification body, so the ISO 9001 certificate does not convert on its own.
