What the ISO 14064-1 readiness check covers
The check measures your greenhouse gas inventory against ISO 14064-1:2018. Its nineteen questions are grouped into four areas: Principles and inventory boundaries; Quantification and the base year; Inventory quality and the GHG report; and Verification readiness. Each answer is scored and weighted; the questions marked “Double weight” are the ones verification bodies examine first.
What you get
A readiness report sent to your e-mail: an overall score with one of four readings — Verification-ready, Nearly there, Gaps to close or Starting out — a score for each of the four areas, your priority actions, a suggested order of work and a table of all your answers.
How to use it
Answer from evidence rather than intention: if a control or requirement exists on paper but is not operating, score it as not operating. Share the report with the people who own each area, and use the ISO 14064-1 hub for the requirements, the route to a verified ISO 14064-1 GHG inventory and what it costs.
Questions people ask
Is the ISO 14064-1 readiness check free?
Yes. It is free, takes about ten minutes and carries no obligation. Your readiness report is sent to your e-mail when you submit your answers.
Is this a GHG verification or a certificate?
No. It is a self-assessment that shows where your inventory stands before verification. A GHG inventory is verified, not certified: an independent verification body examines the inventory and the GHG report and issues a verification statement at the agreed level of assurance. Sterling's expert and experienced consultants prepare organisations for that verification; Sterling does not verify and does not issue the statement.
What happens after I submit my answers?
Your readiness report is sent by e-mail: your overall score and reading, a score for each of the four areas, your priority actions, a suggested order of work and a table of all your answers. If you want help with the result, a Sterling consultant can walk through it with you in a free discovery call.
Who should answer the questions?
Your sustainability or GHG lead, with input from finance, procurement, facilities and the site contacts who own the data. Answer from the evidence you could show today.
How is the score worked out?
Each answer is scored, and the questions marked “Double weight”, the ones verification bodies examine first, count twice. The total gives one of four readings: Verification-ready, Nearly there, Gaps to close or Starting out.
Does the check cover our scope 3 emissions?
Yes, through the questions on indirect emissions. ISO 14064-1:2018 requires you to decide which indirect emissions are significant using documented criteria, quantify those and explain any exclusions; the check asks whether that has been done and evidenced.
