In short

SOC 1 attestation in Houston at a glance

Houston's financial statements often rest on someone else's controls. When an energy company outsources settlement, a hospital group sends claims to a billing administrator or a trading firm relies on a processor, the auditors ask whether the provider's controls can be relied on. The Greater Houston Partnership describes energy and health sectors large enough to make such outsourcing routine. The usual reply is a SOC 1 report, an attestation from a licensed CPA firm describing the provider's system and testing its controls over financial reporting (design only in Type 1, design and operation in Type 2). Sterling readies control descriptions and evidence from its New York office, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included.

SOC 1 in Houston: questions clients ask

Which Houston providers are asked for a SOC 1 report?

Service organisations whose work feeds clients' financial statements, such as billing, settlement, payroll, claims and revenue-cycle providers. The client's auditor requests a report on the relevant controls before relying on the provider's work. A licensed CPA firm issues it as an attestation, not as a certificate.

Does a SOC 1 report cover cybersecurity?

Only as far as security controls affect financial reporting. SOC 1 concentrates on controls relevant to clients' financial statements, while SOC 2 reports on security, availability and other trust criteria. Many Houston providers hold both, and a CPA firm issues each.
