SOC 1 attestation in Chicago at a glance

In the Chicago financial and insurance community, a client's auditor will often ask a simple question of an outsourced provider: which of your controls can we rely on? World Business Chicago names Northern Trust, Aon, Zurich North America, CME Group and Cboe Global Markets among the region's anchors, and each depends on administrators, processors and billing providers. SOC 1 is the attestation report that answers the auditor, describing the provider's system and testing the design, and for a Type 2 report the operation, of controls relevant to financial reporting. A licensed CPA firm issues the report. Sterling readies control descriptions and evidence from its New York office, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included.

SOC 1 in Chicago: questions clients ask

When does a Chicago provider need a SOC 1 report?

When its services affect a client's financial reporting, such as processing transactions, holding assets or administering benefits. The client's auditor will ask for a report on the controls. A SOC 1 report is an attestation by a licensed CPA firm, not a certificate.

Is SOC 1 the same as SOC 2?

No. SOC 1 covers controls relevant to clients' financial reporting, while SOC 2 covers security, availability and other trust criteria. Many Chicago providers need both. A CPA firm issues either report; Sterling prepares the organisation and its evidence, but it does not attest or issue the report.
