In short

SOC 1 attestation in Boston at a glance

Boston's asset managers, insurers and property firms outsource processes whose errors would show up in someone else's accounts. Their auditors cannot test every provider each year, so they rely on SOC 1: a CPA firm's report on the provider's description of its system and on the design, and for Type 2 the operating effectiveness, of controls relevant to the client's financial reporting. It is an attestation, not a certificate. Sterling's New York office helps the provider define control objectives, document and test controls, fix gaps and prepare people for fieldwork, using Effivity to keep evidence in order. The CPA firm alone issues the report. Local questions follow.

SOC 1 in Boston: questions clients ask

Who asks a Boston service provider for SOC 1?

The auditors of its clients. When a provider processes transactions or maintains records that feed a client's financial statements, those auditors need a report on the controls, and a SOC 1 prepared by a CPA firm gives them one. Type 2 covers a period; Type 1 looks at design at a point in time.

How does SOC 1 differ from ISO 9001 for a service firm?

SOC 1 is an auditor's report on specific controls relevant to clients' financial reporting; ISO 9001 certifies a quality management system. A Boston provider may hold both, since one answers its clients' auditors and the other answers procurement teams. Neither is a substitute for the other.
