SOC 2 attestation in London at a glance

Software and fintech companies in London that sell to American enterprises meet the same request early in the deal: share your SOC 2 report. London's concentration of City clients and cloud suppliers means many firms need it alongside, not instead of, ISO 27001. SOC 2 is an attestation, not a certification: an independent licensed firm reports on controls against the AICPA trust services criteria, with Type 1 covering design and Type 2 operation over a period. Sterling's London office prepares the controls, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included with the engagement; the attestation report is issued by an independent licensed firm. National law, regulators and accreditation detail sit on the United Kingdom page rather than here.

Requirements

What SOC 2 requires

Strip away the vocabulary and SOC 2 asks a service organisation to report on six things about the controls behind its service.

You describe your system accuratelyA system description sets out your services, infrastructure, people, data and the boundaries of what the report covers.
Security is designed inControls protect the system against unauthorised access and use; security is the one category every SOC 2 report includes.
Access is granted on need and reviewedLogical and physical access is approved on need, removed when no longer required and reviewed regularly.
Changes and operations are controlledSystem changes are authorised and tested, and operations are monitored so incidents are detected and handled.
Risks and vendors are assessedRisks to your commitments, including those coming from vendors and business partners, are assessed and acted on.
Controls work over timeFor a Type 2 report, a licensed CPA firm tests that the controls operated effectively across the review period.

SOC 2 in London: questions clients ask

Do London firms need SOC 2 if they hold ISO 27001?

Often they need both, because the two answer different buyers. ISO 27001 is a certificate; SOC 2 is a report from an independent licensed firm, preferred by many American buyers. Many London suppliers build one control set and map it to both, so the extra effort is smaller than starting again.

Which SOC 2 report suits a young London company?

A Type 1 report is the usual first step because it covers design at a point in time, and it can unlock early deals. A Type 2 report follows, showing controls working over an observation period. Buyers often state which they want, so check the request before choosing.
