ISO and GRC certification in Ethiopia at a glance
Ethiopia's demand for certification comes from export buyers, regulators and investors rather than from a single mandatory scheme. The Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority regulates food, medicines and medical devices and runs facility licensing through its i-License system. The National Bank of Ethiopia licenses and supervises banks and insurers, the Institute of Ethiopian Standards develops national standards, and the Ethiopian Communications Authority is the Authority named in Personal Data Protection Proclamation No. 1321/2024. Industrial parks run by the Industrial Parks Development Corporation, from Hawassa to Bole Lemi, host manufacturers selling to overseas customers, alongside coffee and horticulture exporters, banks, aviation suppliers and construction firms. The Ethiopian Accreditation Service is the national accreditation body, and certificates are issued by accredited certification bodies, never by Sterling. Sterling's Nairobi office serves clients across Ethiopia, on-site where the work needs it and remotely otherwise, drawing on 8,100+ client engagements in 60+ countries and 20+ years, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included with the engagement.

EFDA states it ensures the safety and quality of food, the safety, quality and efficacy of medicines and the safety, quality and functionality of medical devices; it registers and issues market authorisations and certificates of competency and regulates production, importation, exportation and distribution of regulated products. Accreditation and recognition
- Ethiopian Accreditation Service (EAS), formerly the Ethiopian National Accreditation Office (ENAO): National accreditation body for conformity assessment bodies in Ethiopia; the Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration describes ENAO as an autonomous federal government office with its own legal personality that accredits testing, calibration, certification and inspection bodies.
Look for a certification body whose accreditation scope covers your standard and sector, from a national accreditation body recognised under the international arrangements of Global ACI (Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). Sterling does not certify.
Tenders and procurement
- Federal public procurement and supplier registration (e-GP) (Federal Public Procurement and Property Authority (FPPA)): The FPPA describes itself as established and functional as a regulatory body for procurement and property management and links the e-GP portal and a supplier registration page from its site. Quality or security certificates matter only where an individual bidding document sets them.
Economic zones
- Industrial parks and special economic zones developed by the Industrial Parks Development Corporation (IPDC): manufacturing, textiles and garments, agro-processing
- Ethiopian Investment Commission (EIC): agriculture, manufacturing, mining, ICT, tourism

Questions Ethiopia clients ask
Which authority enforces Ethiopia's personal data protection law?
Ethiopia's Communications Authority holds the role. Under the personal data Proclamation it is the body that must ensure enforcement, judge whether other countries protect data comparably and maintain the register of controllers and processors, while the Ministry of Innovation and Technology shapes policy. Ask the Authority or your counsel how its procedures currently work.
Is there a national accreditation body in Ethiopia?
Yes: the Ethiopian Accreditation Service, known until March 2022 as the Ethiopian National Accreditation Office. It accredits testing, calibration, certification and inspection bodies, and ILAC lists it as a signatory to its mutual recognition arrangement for testing, medical testing and calibration. Always read the accreditation scope on any certificate you plan to rely on.
Which body regulates food safety for Ethiopian food producers and exporters?
The Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority. It states that it ensures the safety and quality of food, issues market authorisations and certificates of competency, and regulates the production, importation, exportation and distribution of regulated products. Its i-License system takes facility licence applications. Check which licence and inspection route applies to your products with the Authority directly.
Do Ethiopian suppliers need ISO certificates to register for federal tenders?
Not as a general condition that the Authority publishes. The Federal Public Procurement and Property Authority regulates procurement and links an electronic portal and a supplier registration page from its site. Whether a bidder needs ISO 9001 or another certificate depends on the bidding document, so read each tender's evaluation criteria before you commit to a certification plan.
Which language are certification audits in Ethiopia carried out in?
Usually English for documents and reports, with Amharic or a local language often used on the shop floor. Federal laws and regulators' resources are available in English, but operators and suppliers may be more at ease in Amharic. Settle the audit language, any interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body when you apply.
