In short

ISO 42001 certification in Guangzhou at a glance

Panyu's government has set out how it intends to become an AI district: 140 or more application scenarios opened to local firms, a planned chief AI officer system, special funding for fields such as brain-computer interfaces and embodied intelligence, and a stated commitment to AI safety governance covering ethics and data security. Its University Town supplies research depth. Companies building or deploying AI there meet ISO/IEC 42001, the management system standard for AI. It asks for an AI policy, impact assessment, risk treatment across the lifecycle, data governance, oversight of suppliers and models, and monitoring. Sterling builds the system alongside ISO/IEC 27001 work from its Shanghai office, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included.

What ISO 42001 requires

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 42001 requires a company to prove six things about how it governs the AI it builds or uses.

Leadership sets the rules for AITop management sets an AI policy and objectives, assigns accountability and provides resources for responsible use.
You assessed AI risks and impactsRisks from AI systems, and their impacts on individuals, groups and society, are assessed before and during use and then treated.
Each AI system is managed through its lifeDesign, data, testing, deployment, monitoring and retirement follow defined processes with records you can show.
Data and third parties are under controlThe quality and origin of data, and suppliers of models or components, are managed against your own requirements.
You monitor, audit and improveAI systems and the management system are monitored, audited internally and reviewed by management, with problems corrected.

ISO 42001 in Guangzhou: questions clients ask

Does Panyu's AI safety commitment require ISO 42001?

No. The district states a commitment to AI safety governance, including ethics and data security, but it does not require a certificate. ISO/IEC 42001 is a voluntary management system standard that customers and boards increasingly request. Use it to show that governance is organised, not as a condition of working in the district.

What do Panyu AI firms inventory first for ISO 42001?

Which AI systems they build or use, what data trains and feeds them, who is accountable for each system's outputs and which suppliers or models they depend on. That inventory drives the impact assessments and controls. Teams usually find that supplier and data-source records are the thinnest part and plan extra time for them.
