ISO and GRC certification in Barbados at a glance
Certification demand in Barbados comes from several regulators and buyers rather than from one national scheme. The Central Bank of Barbados revised its Technology and Cyber Risk Management Guideline as at March 2026; it tells licensees and payment service providers to validate suppliers through attestation reports or certifications such as SOC 2 or ISO 27001. The Financial Services Commission supervises insurance, securities, mutual funds, pensions and credit unions, while the Sustainable Fisheries Management and Development (Seafood Markets and Businesses) Act, 2025-11 requires seafood businesses to follow Codex, HACCP and ISO food safety standards. The Data Protection Act, 2019 adds registration, security and breach duties for controllers, under a Data Protection Commissioner. No Barbadian accreditation body appears in the IAAC or ILAC member lists, so certificates usually carry accreditation from another economy within the international arrangements. Sterling's New York office serves Barbadian organisations on site where the work needs it and remotely otherwise, drawing on 8,100+ client engagements in 60+ countries and 20+ years, with Effivity and Sterling Academy included. Certification is by an accredited certification body, never by Sterling.

It applies to licensees under the Financial Institutions Act, Cap. 324A and to payment service providers defined in the National Payment System Act, 2021 (Act 2021-1). It says regulated entities must validate the security practices of third-party vendors by obtaining attestation reports or certifications of comprehensive security management systems, giving SOC 2 and ISO 27001 as examples, and that sensitive payment card data must be PCI compliant. It also requires a governance framework for any use of AI and ML, tested disaster recovery and a business continuity link to the Operational Risk Management Guideline, and says it is based on international standards including ISO/IEC 27000. | ISO/IEC 27001, SOC 2, PCI DSS, ISO/IEC 42001 |

| Minister responsible for Health as competent authority for fish safety; Chief Fisheries Officer Fish and fish products, seafood markets and seafood businesses | Sustainable Fisheries Management and Development Act, 2025-10, Part XXI (Fish quality and safety): the Minister responsible for Health is the competent authority for the official control of the safety of fish and fish products, with functions that include a register of approved fish handling establishments and inspection of fishery establishments, and a person who sells or exports fish must comply with applicable national and international food safety standards. An aquaculture or mariculture licence application must include a hazard analysis and critical control point plan. The Seafood Markets and Businesses Act, 2025-11 (section 37) requires an owner or operator of a seafood business to comply with Codex Alimentarius food standards, Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point standards and International Organisation for Standardisation standards. | HACCP, ISO 22000 |
| Barbados Medical Products Authority Medicines, medical devices and other medical products | Barbados Medical Products Act, 2026-12 establishes the Authority, whose regulatory scope includes inspection of establishments throughout the medical products supply chain and laboratory testing, and provides for medical device approval resting on risk classification, conformity review, quality management and post-market vigilance. Accreditation and recognition
- Barbados National Standards Institution (BNSI): National standards body: a joint undertaking of the Government of Barbados and the private sector, incorporated under the Companies Act, whose functions under the Standards Act, Cap. 326A include preparing, promoting and adopting standards, establishing and publishing them, recognising standards of other standards bodies, acting as custodian of the national measurement standards and operating testing laboratories; the Minister may declare a standard compulsory by order.
- CARICOM Regional Organisation for Standards and Quality (CROSQ): Regional standards organisation established under the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas, whose Agreement has the force of law in Barbados under the Standards Act; IAAC lists it among its associate members and its site describes accreditation and laboratory competence under ISO/IEC 17025 and ISO 15189.
Look for a certification body whose accreditation scope covers your standard and sector, from a national accreditation body recognised under the international arrangements of Global ACI (Global Accreditation Cooperation Incorporated, formerly the IAF MLA). Sterling does not certify.
Tenders and procurement
- Public procurement of goods, works and services (Public Procurement Act, 2021-30 (amended by Act 2023-11), whose proclamation Parliament's statutes listing records as October 1st, 2023 by 2023/67): A procuring entity may require suppliers to meet qualification criteria it considers appropriate and to show capability and resources. The criteria may include professional, technical and environmental qualifications, technical competence, financial resources, managerial capability and experience, and must be stated in the pre-qualification or solicitation document and applied equally to all suppliers. The Act names no ISO standard, so each tender sets its own evidence.

Questions Barbados clients ask
Who regulates personal data in Barbados?
Responsibility for administering the Data Protection Act, 2019 (Act 2019–29) rests with the Data Protection Commissioner, a public officer created by section 70. The Government website presents the unit as the Data Protection Commission, housed in the Ministry of Industry, Innovation, Science and Technology. Because Parliament's listing shows proclamation with exceptions, confirm the current position with the Commissioner.
Does Barbados have a national accreditation body for certification bodies?
No Barbadian accreditation body appears in the IAAC full or associate member lists or in ILAC's members-by-category list. Management system certificates therefore usually carry accreditation from another economy within the international mutual recognition arrangements. The Barbados National Standards Institution has a standards, metrology and testing role. Ask any certification body for its accreditation certificate and scope before you sign.
Does the Central Bank of Barbados expect suppliers to hold ISO 27001 or SOC 2?
It mentions both as examples. The Technology and Cyber Risk Management Guideline, revised as at March 31 2026, tells regulated entities to validate third-party vendors by obtaining attestation reports or certifications of comprehensive security management systems, such as SOC 2 or ISO 27001. This is illustrative wording, not a named requirement; ask your bank or payment customer which evidence it accepts.
Which authority controls the safety of fish exports in Barbados?
The Minister responsible for Health is the competent authority under Part XXI of the Sustainable Fisheries Management and Development Act, 2025-10, and keeps a register of approved fish handling establishments. Seafood businesses must additionally follow Codex, HACCP and ISO standards under the 2025-11 Act. Ask the Ministry which approvals your exports need.
Are ISO audits in Barbados carried out in English?
Yes, in practice. English is the language of Barbadian Acts, Central Bank guidelines and procurement documents, so audits, document reviews and interviews are normally run in English. If some staff prefer another language, agree an interpreter and the language of controlled documents with the certification body at application. Sterling prepares the organisation from its New York office; the certification body runs the audit.
