In short

ISO 17025 accreditation in Perth at a glance

Perth's resources economy generates a steady flow of samples: ore and concentrates, soils and grains, water, process streams. The laboratories that analyse them live or die by the credibility of their results, and that is what ISO/IEC 17025 certifies in the narrow sense of accreditation: technical competence for named methods. Locally the benchmark is visible. ChemCentre at Bentley states it has held NATA accreditation since 1950, and NATA keeps a Western Australia office. The standard requires validated methods, calibrated and traced equipment, measurement uncertainty, personnel competence, impartiality and sound reporting. Sterling's Sydney office prepares the laboratory through gap assessment, method validation support and internal audit, then NATA assesses and decides. Sterling does not accredit.

Requirements

What ISO 17025 requires

Strip away the vocabulary and ISO/IEC 17025 requires a laboratory to prove six things about its competence and the results it reports.

You are impartialCommercial, financial or other pressures do not influence results, and risks to impartiality are identified and managed.
Staff are competent and authorisedEach person who performs, reviews or reports work is qualified, trained, monitored and authorised for those tasks.
Equipment is calibrated and traceableEquipment is fit for purpose and calibrated, with measurement results traceable to recognised references.
Methods are validated or verifiedMethods suit the work, are validated where needed or verified before use, and measurement uncertainty is evaluated.
Results are checked and reported properlyQuality control and proficiency testing confirm validity, and reports state results clearly, accurately and without ambiguity.
The management system worksComplaints, nonconforming work, risks, internal audits and management review run under a documented management system.

ISO 17025 in Perth: questions clients ask

Who accredits laboratories in Perth?

NATA, Australia's national accreditation body for laboratories, has a Western Australia office, and laboratories apply for accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 for named methods. Accreditation judges technical competence for each method, unlike management-system certification, which looks at the system as a whole. Sterling readies the laboratory for assessment; NATA decides.

Is there a well-known accredited public laboratory in Perth?

ChemCentre, a Western Australian statutory authority at Bentley, says it has held NATA accreditation since 1950, and NATA's directory shows an ISO/IEC 17025 scope that includes agribusiness analyses of grains, soils and stockfeeds. It illustrates how a method-level scope reads; a private laboratory's scope will differ.
