SOC 2 attestation in Canberra at a glance

SOC 2 is the outlier among the standards Canberra suppliers meet: it comes from the United States, and it arrives with exports. The ACT Government names quantum and cyber companies, data-centre operators and a digital technology sector of more than a thousand businesses, and the ones that sell internationally find US buyers asking for a report on their controls. A SOC 2 report is an attestation, not a certificate: an independent CPA firm gives an opinion on a service organisation's controls against the AICPA trust services criteria, always security and optionally availability, confidentiality, processing integrity or privacy. Sterling serves Canberra from its Sydney office, prepares scope, controls, policies and evidence, and does not attest. The auditor you choose does.

What drives SOC 2 in Canberra

Demand is buyer-led: US and enterprise customers ask for a SOC 2 report; no Canberra authority requires it.

Requirements

What SOC 2 requires

Strip away the vocabulary and SOC 2 asks a service organisation to report on six things about the controls behind its service.

You describe your system accuratelyA system description sets out your services, infrastructure, people, data and the boundaries of what the report covers.
Security is designed inControls protect the system against unauthorised access and use; security is the one category every SOC 2 report includes.
Access is granted on need and reviewedLogical and physical access is approved on need, removed when no longer required and reviewed regularly.
Changes and operations are controlledSystem changes are authorised and tested, and operations are monitored so incidents are detected and handled.
Risks and vendors are assessedRisks to your commitments, including those coming from vendors and business partners, are assessed and acted on.
Controls work over timeFor a Type 2 report, a licensed CPA firm tests that the controls operated effectively across the review period.

SOC 2 in Canberra: questions clients ask

Which Canberra firms get asked for SOC 2?

Cloud, SaaS and cyber product companies that sell to US enterprises or multinational customers. Firms selling only to Australian government usually meet national frameworks instead. The report is issued by an independent CPA firm, not by Sterling. Procurement teams often name the criteria in the questionnaire, so ask early.

Does SOC 2 replace the security evidence Canberra government buyers want?

Not necessarily. Government buyers may ask for national frameworks or assessments that SOC 2 does not substitute. Some of the underlying controls overlap, so one body of evidence can serve several requests. Confirm the accepted evidence with each buyer. Evidence overlap is the practical benefit.
